Why did WINNER dissapear? Why aren't they talked about anymore

Main Post:

Anyone remember WINNER?

The reality survival show "WIN" aired and it was a massive success. It was so successful that it spawned a legion of fans (and anti-fans) of both WINNER and ultimately, IKON.

In 2014, after winning the show, WINNER debuted and had probably the single greatest year as a rookie and dominated the charts and year-end awards. They looked like the next big thing in Kpop.

And then... not much. There were frequent delays in their comebacks and one member ended up departing. After that, they released Really Really, Everyday, Millions which were met with massive sucess. But the problem is that YG shelved the group for long periods of time, which caused WINNER to constantly lose the momentum they kept building up with comebacks and new music due to the long hiatus. I remember there was really long period of time where they weren't active, and YG actually issued a public apology to the group and the fans and promised two comebacks in the next year. He was good on those promises, and they were able to steadily gain momentum and popularity for a good stretch of time. However, they spent so much time on the shelf that their enlistment timeframe was creeping right around the corner which again did a number on the momentum that they'd had. Also, the generation of fans switched over in the last few years from 2nd/3rd gen fans to 3rd/4th generation fans. People who were here for early 3rd gen might remember WINNER and songs like "Really Really" and "Island" but I've noticed that I really don't see many 4th gen stans ever mention them. Holiday (their 2022 comeback after a 2 year hiatus) did great in terms of sales, around 140K sales, but they once again lost momentum, they are barely talked about them anymore

Now the group was active for 2022 til mid 2023, but they've become a case of "What If?"

Seriously, what happened to this group? Why didn't they succeed much more than they should have?

Top Comment: can’t speak to any of their past work, but 2 members are currently serving their military enlistment so that’s probs why they’re quiet rn

‘Winner’ (2024) Movie Review - A Look Into Reality Winner and Her Life

Main Post: ‘Winner’ (2024) Movie Review - A Look Into Reality Winner and Her Life

Top Comment: Kinda cool how the HBO movie was called Reality and this one is called Winner. Very different tones obviously. I loved the film. She comes across as super interesting, smart, complicated and empathetic. It’s a shame she was made an example of. If only she could have worked in refugee camps like she dreamed, her life would have turned out differently. I like how the end of the movie gave her future goals. And I would watch a whole movie JUST about her Dad. He was fascinating and the casting of Zach Galifianakis was genius.

YG really fucking fumbled with WINNER. And iKon too.

Top Comment: Ikon's doing more at a small company with way fewer resources now, too. This past year, they had a great album, several solo releases by more than half of the members and their first US tour. After Kingdom, yg threw them back into the basement to wait out their contact expiration. I'm less familiar with Winner but it seems like they've similarly been held back from actually releasing music at a good pace. Yg simply doesn't let their artists stay active with music. It's bizarre. They kind of let Treasure put out music a little more often but even they are slower with releases than their peers with similar access to resources.

Not cool, Winner in the Park , not cool

Main Post:

employees asked to stop sharing tips with other location... because the park location is super busy and clearly less pleasant to work in.... Management response : implement a Tip Credit , which lowers their wages while making it the customer’s job the make up the difference.... Google NYC tip credit, legal but not cool

Top Comment: Unpopular opinion : if I order standing up and then come get my own item/food - I’m done tipping. It’s not up for other customer to pay employees. Charge what you need to make your business model work but stop trying to wring 20% more out of me on the premise that the poor barista is underpaid. That is between the employee and the employer.

Best things to get from Winner?

Main Post:

I haven't bought anything from Winner on 7th Ave in a long time, mostly because I'm usually working during the day in Manhattan (except for an occasional WFH day). I have some vacation days coming up though, so that might be a good time to stop by. I think the only thing I've had there so far was the cinnamon rolls a couple of years ago (which were really good). I know they sell a lot of other stuff though. Which pastries and which breads are particularly worth it, iyo?

Also: what is the best time to get there if you want to avoid too much of the breakfast stuff being already sold out?

Thanks in advance. I've also walked by at night recently - I hadn't realized they sold stuff for dinner too.

Top Comment: Baguette is good for sure but honestly I’ve switched over to Brooklyn French bakers. I hate to say it, the Brooklyn French bakers have better bread products.

Winner’s debut album is one of the best debut album in K-pop

Main Post:

I randomly started listening to 2014 S/S tonight which is Winner’s debut album that came out TEN YEARS AGO.

I remember waiting forEVER for their debut after they became the winning team or WHO IS NEXT.

And I was like bruh YG where is their damn debut and then they dropped 2014 S/S and I will never forget how in love I was with it.

Ten years later I am revisiting this album again and it is still such great album. From their title track “empty” that was written by B.I to the fun bops like Don’t Flirt to Love is a Lie. And also Smile Again, one of their most iconic songs from the WIN show.

Also recommend the song Different it’s a soft pop ballad, this song is such a vibeee especially at night

Anyways just wanted to plug this album in case people aren’t too familiar with it since it is a decade old now, but it is one of the best debut full albums in my (biased) opinion!

Also it’s nice to reminisce back to the time when groups would debut with FULL ALBUMS lol

Top Comment: I was just checking out Seungyoon's videos cuz I suddenly miss hearing his unique rock voice! Shallow Chinese song - Tender (mayday) Tobacco Shop Lady Sharing Mino's heartfelt 10th anniversary message since so rare to have a WINNER post here. Hello, this is Song Min-ho. It's our 10th anniversary, but honestly, it doesn't feel like just yesterday. I don't even find myself thinking, "Wow, time has flown by." When I think about why that is, I guess it's because there have been so many changes. Of course, they were positive changes. From the youthful exuberance and thoughtless passion of our early debut days that will never return, to the first big wave we faced with a member's departure, and then the overwhelming love we received afterward—the pressure that came with it and the ways we learned to overcome it, the deepening bond with our fans as we worked to give back even more. When I think about how long 10 years is, a span of time long enough to call "time," I feel proud and honored. I believe we were able to fill that long period with boldness, without faltering in the face of change, and with love for each other—thanks to our fans and the family who made WINNER together.
